Much to the fans' amusement, Ayda announced her quitting the show after 1 series, due to her busy schedule in early Similar to Ayda, Nick being chosen to replaced veteran judge Louis Walsh who quit after 11 years received mixed reception from the fandom, who questioned his credentials for being a music judge on a show like The X Factor.
Even Louis Walsh and other veteran judge Sharon referred him as 'inexperienced'. In his year, he was assigned the Boys category by the public, although like the other judges, he wanted the Girls, since they were the strongest category.

In fairness to him, he was able to guide his final boy, Che all the way to the final, where he placed 3rd, while Simon himself didn't even have act in the quarter-final that year - though that was mainly because Nick had a stronger category. In , it was revealed that he decided to leave due to his commitments to his radio work and was replaced again by Louis Walsh. Even before being assigned as a judge, Robbie was always close to The X Factor. He assisted some judges at the Judges' Houses stage Gary in and Sharon in and , acted as a guest mentor to the finalists occasionally and did many guest performances on the results shows - even duetted with Olly Murs and One Direction in their respective finals.
So when Robbie was announced as a new judge of the fifteenth series of the show, he was met with open arms, unlike his inexperienced wife, Ayda Field. Unfortunately for Robbie, he was assigned the Groups category, which was arguably the weakest category in the series.
What else was bad was that Robbie missed 2 weeks of the live shows, due to tour commitments, which made many fans question his commitment as a mentor. He was replaced by Nile Rodgers, who fans believed should have stayed as a permanent replacement. Despite not having an act in the final just like his wife , Robbie was able to duet with Scarlett on his song, "Angels", which helped her finish runner-up to eventual winner Dalton Harris.
Robbie will always be memorable and close to The X Factor, but the best mentor he was not. Before Mel B became a full time judge in , she appeared as a guest judge during the auditions in When she was assigned the Boys category, many people would believe she would become the winning mentor as one of her acts, Andrea Faustini was the original favourite. Unfortunately, she lost her other three acts, Jake Quickenden , Jack Walton , and Paul Akister in weeks three, four, and five respectively with Andrea being her last act.
What's worse was that Mel B wasn't even present with her final act when he was eliminated as she missed the first part of the final, due to illness. In , she replaced Nicole at the auditions when she wasn't well and acted as guest mentor to Simon, alongside Spice Girl Emma Bunton and assisted him with his Girls category. In , a clip of Mel B being accidentally groped in the bum by Louis resurfaced, which lead to fans turning against Louis and shocked that it wasn't dealt in a bigger manner back in Sadly, this is still Mel B's most memorable moment on the show!
Unlike Ayda and Nick, Kelly being assigned as a judge made sense. She brought a lot of humour and knowledge to the show. The problem is, she wasn't very memorable, especially since she was only in a single series who often sided with unpopular judge Gary Barlow during tense exchanges between the judges in the live shows. Having said that, she did play a big part in creating Little Mix , who not only won the entire series but went on become one of The X Factor's biggest success stories.
In terms of her mentoring, she did all right. In her year, she mentored the Girls category which was arguably the strongest category that year and did her very best to connect with all her acts. In the first week, when all the judges had to vote off one act from their respective category, Kelly made the hardest decision to vote off Amelia Lily , which received criticism from fans, who believed Sophie Habibis should have been voted off.
Despite, Janet Devlin winning the public vote from Weeks 2 to 5, the fourth week was her lowest as Kelly was absent both Saturday and Sunday due to illness with former winner Alexandra Burke substituting and Misha B had to compete against Sophie in the bottom two with Sophie being voted off by a unanimous decision from the judges.
Although these rumors were false, Kelly did feel responsible that her absence contributed to why Sophie and Misha B were in the bottom two and reconciled with Tulisa soon afterwards. Luckily, after Frankie Cocozza was ejected, Amelia Lily and the other three acts who were voted off by their mentors James Michael , Jonjo Kerr and 2 Shoes were given another chance at the live shows to replace Frankie and Amelia Lily won the vote and returned in the sixth week. Kelly was in the strongest position to become the winning mentor not only with Amelia Lily and Misha B as one of the strongest vocalists and performers but when Amelia Lily, Misha B, and Janet reached the quarter-final which guaranteed Kelly to have an act in the final.
As she had three of her acts in the quarter-final where only five acts were remaining, Kelly had an opportunity of having Amelia Lily, Misha B, and Janet occupy all three places in the final, and Amelia winning the public vote in Week 6 and the quarter-final.
Unfortunately, Janet and Misha B were in the bottom two in the quarter-final with Janet being sent home, and Misha B automatically being voted off by the public vote in the semi-final. Amelia became Kelly's final act and was guided all the way to the final where she placed 3rd. What would have happened to Kelly if Amelia didn't return?!
Before Rita became a full time judge in , she was a guest judge in at the auditions, before Nicole Scherzinger became the fourth permanent judge and enjoyed many of the acts, particularly Kye Sones , who sang one of her songs in front of her.
When Rita was announced as the new full time judge, replacing Mel B on the twelfth series, this received mixed reception from fans, especially since earlier the same year she was also a judge on The Voice , which is often depicted as a rival to The X Factor.
Nevertheless, her reception was still more positive than Nick, who became a new judge in the same series. Her commitment to her job could often be questioned, due to her missing a number of auditions due to scheduling conflicts. Luckily for her though, she was assigned the Girls category, the category all the 4 judges agreed was the strongest that year. Eventually, she was able to guide her final act Louisa to the final.
She even got to duet with Louisa, which contributed to the girl winning the show and Rita becoming the winning mentor. Despite having a successful year, Rita decided not to return the following year as she explained that her music comes ahead of being a judge for her. Tulisa replaced Cheryl in the eighth series of the show and was the youngest judge to appear.
In her first series, she mentored the Groups category - this was the first time this category was mentored by someone other than Simon or Louis Walsh. Before her first year, an act from the Groups category never won and Tulisa was determined to change that. In the live shows, Tulisa received criticism for accusing contestant Misha B of bullying other acts backstage, along with Louis Walsh.
Despite her amends, many people, including Gary Barlow believed that this still affected Misha's chances of the winning the show. In terms of her category, she lost 3 of her 4 groups in the first five weeks of the show, including boyband The Risk , despite boybands traditionally getting far in the show. With Little Mix as her final act, she helped them progress so much to the point she was able to guide them all the way to the final - first time a girlband achieved this and Tulisa made history by having Little Mix win, therefore having the first group to ever win the show.
Lucy dropped out of the live shows since she missed a live show due to illness and didn't think it was fair for her to have a bye week. Ella, who was considered one of the favourites to win, landed in the bottom two with other favourite James Arthur in the seventh live show, which caused anger and upset amongst the judges and the public. Unfortunately, the result went to deadlock and Ella was eliminated, which even saddened presenter Dermot O'Leary , who called Ella his favourite ever contestant.
This left Tulisa without an act even in the quarter-final. Tulisa finally decided not to return for the tenth series after rumours regarding drug use and other commitments.
