The ambulance's siren drowns out the cheers for a reform movement. The woman who throws herself onto the pavement of some lonely street gets more press coverage than an important local woman who dies. America teaches her women many lessons: 1.
Be loud, cruel, and dysfuctional during your lives. Be self-destructive, and you'll be rewarded by somebody, somewhere You must make certain that your death is one heck of a tragic, monumental, outrageous spectacle, so that you will never be forgotten; said death is more successful if you're younger!
Look at the facts. The most popular movies, plays, etc. America makes such a big deal out of Anorexia, cutting, etc. Look at how THIN she is! Wasn't THAT wild? Wonder what she'll NAME the kid She really taught HER a lesson! So your point is "As Americans cultivate the cult of the so-called perfect body, the Brits should have made Eponine in the movie chubby, even if she is supposed to be starving to death, in order not to encourage anorexia in America"?
If that is how real life is in America, then I'm a very proud non-American. But fortunately, my intuition tells me that there's something more in the equation here As Gargamel mentioned, it's about being poor; part of being poor is malnutrition; part of malnutrition involves being very skinny.
I'm sorry that Samantha Barks didn't get a breast reduction for the film to really drive the point of her character's stick figure home, but since she's young and just starting her career, she may not have considered severe body-altering surgery the wisest course of actions for her future prospects. As for the rant specifically targeting the American media, you may want to branch out a bit and realize that the glorification of body types that can only be achieved through eating disorders is not exclusively an American problem.
A quick flip through, say The world at large is no more enlightened than we are at least I'm assuming you're from America; very few fly mindlessly off the cuff at her in a public forum like we do -- no less, mind you, but no more. I guess I'm sorry that you feel the way that you do, and as I said, you're right that popular media at large can have a nasty effect on the psyche, which can easily be taken out on the body, but for all of my problems with the Les Mis film, I really don't feel that a glorification of anorexia or bulimia is one of them.

Slight rant Dear "Les Mis" Fans, I just learned that Samantha Barks, who portrays Eponine in the movie version of the musical, worked out like a madwoman, and went on a diet, in order to look like a waif. Slight rant Erm I just hope I can cram in all the things I want to do before my time is up.

That's a lot of singing. I would love to think of myself as the girl form "Enchanted," you know the girl— ER: [Laughs.
It's going to really annoy me. I'd love to be like that. How much does that come into play? SB: Rapping does not come into play in "Les Miz. When you're singing all the time, if I was to sing to you now I'd be trying to think in rhyme like a rap artist, but there is no rap in "Les Miz.
After the interview. ER: After the event, I don't think I could last very long. I feel like she could. I think you'd be a demon at it. I was curious if you're able to demonstrate what the difference is. I love it. I do like to do a challenge, but I just feel like I'm not up to— You don't have to sing. I'm just wondering — ER: What the faces would look like.
Yeah, because it looks so natural in the movie. SB: I think when you see an opera singer or a musical theater performer in full-blown, big-old belt, their mouth is so huge and you can actually, if you look hard enough, see right down to the— ER: It's like a Disney cartoon. You see the [thing] in the back [of the throat]. So it's kind of like creating those sounds but with a not a neutral face but not like you're straining to sing. It would be hard to give an example without being really annoying to everybody.
ER: But it's all right in the moments of serious angst. In "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables," which is the song my character sings, the survivor's guilt song, all his friends have died, and you go at it with veins and tears and contorted [expressions], that works.
But if I'm doing a love song it's, "Uhh, who's that mangled person … get him off our screen. What were you referring to? Have you seen "The Big Lebowski" now? ER : I have. And I think it's a fantastic movie. ER: No, I can't quote it. I'm not a big quoter. I have a bad memory for that. SB: That's probably one of my pet peeves. I feel really bad when someone goes … I think I did this to you the other day with "Up. I was like, gasps , "You haven't seen it? I'm like "Hang on, you haven't seen it.
SB: I feel like I totally picked on you. What's next? Eddie, there are rumors about you being in the sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man"? ER: I feel like again—we were just asking Sam earlier about other people casting.
With the Internet it's extraordinary that I get told stuff that I've never heard of before. It's wonderfully flattering, but no, I don't have any plans at the moment.
