Religion does not change characters but help them find a higher power spiritually or perhaps to cope with deeper issues. It reveals the true identity of characters personalities and if there the hypocrite of society.
Some feel that Pi followed so many religions because he wanted to be a better person and be more accepting and educated about the world around him and who would keep him safe.
But clearly the amount of religious doctrines he amassed had some say in how he conducted himself. The story would have been entirely different if he had only stuck with one religion or held no religion in his heart. The first religion Pi learned to love was Hinduism because his mother had followed it. Open Document. Essay Sample Check Writing Quality. It is an uplifting and entertaining story, with a few themes about companionship and survival sprinkled throughout.
The ending, however, reveals a second story — a more realistic and dark account replacing the animals from the beginning with crude human counterparts. Suddenly, Life of Pi becomes more than an inspiring tale and transforms into a point to be made about rationality, faith, and how storytelling correlates the two. The point of the book is not for the reader to decide which story he or she thinks is true, but rather what story he or she thinks is the better story.
In real life, this applies in a very similar way to common belief systems and religion. Storytelling is also a means of survival. Similarly, by creating the character of Richard Parker, Pi can disavow the ferocious, violent side of his personality that allowed him to survive on the ocean. He believes that the tiger-like aspect of his nature and the civilized, human aspect stand in tense opposition and occasional partnership with one another, just as the boy Pi and the tiger Richard Parker are both enemies and allies.
Pi enjoys the wealth of stories, but he also senses that, as Father Martin assured him was true of Christianity, each of these stories might simply be aspects of a greater, universal story about love.
Stories and religious beliefs are also linked in Life of Pi because Pi asserts that both require faith on the part of the listener or devotee. Surprisingly for such a religious boy, Pi admires atheists. Pi has nothing but disdain, however, for agnostics, who claim that it is impossible to know either way, and who therefore refrain from making a definitive statement on the question of God. Who created God? How does something come from nothing? To combine the choices just clouds the issue.
To make this simple, ill agree on the point your making. I agree there is a complete divide in the way we can look at reality and the human story. But its not best described Creation vs.
Evolution is not Abiogenesis, another thought-Creation is an event, wheres evolution is process. They cant be compared. I respect your thoughts and opinions. I just had to clear up the evolution train of thought. Evolution can not stand to creationism. But I do agree how you show both sides have there draw backs. But take faith, I respect that you can see and admit this, this is a mature way of talking about this subject.
Just to throw this out, it is incoherent to asks, Who created God? If we are to ask such questions, we fall into a incoherent loop of nonsense. Lets choose the christian God for example. We really need to have a decent amount to study in the scriptures to debate this, I have spent time so I would feel fine stating this.
God is the first cause of all reality, hes the underlining consciousness of all understanding. Titus 1;2 helps us to understand. It shows God before time. Simple, there is a first cause of reality. You cant run from this problem with incoherent loop holes. Hard Materialist try and argue this, very quickly show a huge lack of knowledge in the concepts of theology, and it becomes known at that moment useful communication fails.
And if we need to address these issues before assuming the theology account of the story. Which I do enjoy QM in all its madness :. There is a middle were some people stand, searching and find wonderfully things :.
I have a different take on The Bible. It was the best intellectual explanation of its day, years ago, but is totally invalid today. I find Bible history an enticing subject, but only in an anthropological way. Very little of what humanity knew before the Enlightenment was right, and even afterwards is not so solid.
They are the explanations that hold up to the most critical of philosophical thinking and scientific research. Intelligent Design has been well refuted by many, both philosophically and logically, but it is still an interesting hypothesis, and I can understand why some embrace it. The trouble is the immense weight of evidence is on the side of evolution.
It is the best explanation by far. A better concept for you side to embrace is the idea of Emergence. How does order keep popping up in so much entropy? You are commenting using your WordPress.

Universes of the Mind A celebration of stories that, while they may have been invented, are still true. The second story shows true human nature and offers a way humans can learn about themselves.
The story without animals is a learning experience in the same way that humanity looks back and reflects upon conflicts, wars and other unfavourable events from the past in order to avoid any future repetition of similar events.
Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe? In the first story, Pi survives by spending his time trying to desensitise Richard Parker to himself, as well as trying to keep both of them alive. However, in the second story, it is just Pi struggling to balance his deteriorating mental health caused by the barbarity of what he has experienced while also trying to survive against the harsh conditions of life at sea.
It demonstrates true human endeavour, managing to stay alive for days while isolated from the world and scarred from psychological trauma and not only being able to adapt to returning to human society but also managing to thrive in it just as well as did Pi did before his family left India.
Although it is more sad and painful to read than the first, it does have a hopeful aspect to it. Pi was alone, he was scared and only a teenager with nowhere to go and no one to help him.
