Hinton's life. Taming The Star Runner is an interesting blend of Hinton's jaded past with her new and improved life. Hinton continues to write in the third person omniscient narration that centrals on a teenage boy facing typical adolescent predicaments. Travis shares many of the same characteristics as Hinton.
He is a fifteen-year old aspiring writer who is first introduced after leaving juvenile detention for assaulting his physically and mentally abusive step-father, Stan. Travis is banished to live with his uncle Ken at a ranch outside of Tulsa as if to serve as a form of rehabilitation. At the age of fifteen Hinton had already sold her first book The Outsiders , just as Travis does.
Hinton is able to embody Travis because she utilizes most of her personal experiences when creating his character. The narrator reveals the story of Travis, the protagonist of Taming The Star Runner, in the voice of the familiar. Hinton writes for a very specific audience; young adults. In many interviews she has stated that she wanted to write books that teens would want to read, nothing too fluffy and nothing overtly glory; a straightforward, realistic novel.
